I had a dog of dreams once.<\/p>\n
I found him at the pound–<\/p>\n
where all barking dreams are found.<\/p>\n
I took him home in a coach of wishes,<\/p>\n
and couched him furry in a tapestry of time.<\/p>\n
But as the color faded<\/p>\n
red from the tapestry,<\/p>\n
The dog unwound<\/p>\n
and the dreams were gone.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I had a tree of rainbows;<\/p>\n
Pots of gold forgotten innocence.<\/p>\n
My dog of dreams, leg lifted,<\/p>\n
Nurtured the tree skyward;<\/p>\n
Till my world was trimmed<\/p>\n
with rainbows of laughter,<\/p>\n
And hands upreaching–<\/p>\n
full of nothing.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
My sailboat of sinking water<\/p>\n
rose and fell upon the waves<\/p>\n
And beat its’ satin sails<\/p>\n
against the hole in the sky<\/p>\n
where the gold poured through.<\/p>\n
And I was happy sailing nowhere, smiling–<\/p>\n
I and my dog and my tree.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Then one day the hole turned vacuum<\/p>\n
And, Jesus, sucked my dog away.<\/p>\n
I sleep now,<\/p>\n
Cat paw nestled<\/p>\n
in the dreamless darkness.<\/p>\n
Nothing in the world has changed<\/p>\n
But me.<\/p>\n
And I haven’t been the same<\/p>\n
since the pound<\/p>\n
took back that dog.<\/p>\n
